A drum circle is any group of people playing (usually) hand-drums and percussion in a circle. They are distinct from a drumming group or troupe in that the drum circle is an end in itself rather than preparation for a performance. They can range in size from a handful of players to circles with thousands of participants.

In 1991, during testimony before the United States Senate Special Committee on Aging, Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart stated:

Typically, people gather to drum in drum “circles” with others from the surrounding community. The drum circle offers equality because there is no head or tail. It includes people of all ages. The main objective is to share rhythm and get in tune with each other and themselves. To form a group consciousness. To entrain and resonate. By entrainment, I mean that a new voice, a collective voice, emerges from the group as they drum together.[1]

Allow yourself to participate fully in the Drum Circle. Allow yourself to be an integral part of the total experience. Let’s face it…we live in a very stressful world where life just moves too fast. Occasionally, we all need to take a break, slow down, and focus on what matters.

Drumming has shown to increase the activity of the cancer killing natural immune cells. (click on the big pic to read more) Numerous scientific studies have shown the positive effects that Group Drumming can have on the body. One of the most widely cited is the study, “Composite Effects of Group Drumming Music Therapy on Modulation of Neuroendocrine-Immune Parameters in Normal Subjects” (Bittman et al, 2001) Their findings are, “Group Drumming resulted in increased dehydroepiandrosterone-to-cortisol ratios, increased natural killer cell activity and increased lymphokine-activated killer cell activity without alteration in plasma interluekin 2 or interferon gamma, or in the Beck Anxiety Inventory and the Beck Depression Inventory II.” By now I’m sure your head is spinning and your eyes are crossing. Luckily, for all of us, Dr. Barry Bittman can explain it as, “Group Drumming tunes our biology, orchestrates our immunity and enables healing to begin”
